Tianma brings "black technology", LCD screen can also display fingerprints 31th,July,2020

As we all know, there are many ways to unlock the screen of a mobile phone, such as under-screen fingerprints, face unlocking, side fingerprints, etc. Among them, under-screen fingerprints are mostly used on OLED screens, and there are almost no smartphones using LCD screen fingerprints on the market. However, with the development of technology, LCD screens can also use under-screen fingerprints.

Recently, Tianma Microelectronics officially released the world's first in-screen multi-point fingerprint recognition solution (TED Finger Print, TFP for short). This solution has the characteristics of high integration and high screen-to-body ratio.

Currently, the screen fingerprint solutions on the market place the identification module under the screen, which is called under-screen fingerprint. Tianma’s fingerprint solution integrates the identification module into the LCD panel to become an in-screen fingerprint.

LCD will never be a slave!

The fingerprint recognition solution in the TFP screen is to embed the image collector on the TFT display substrate, so that it can realize the three-in-one touch, display, and fingerprint recognition. At the same time, Tianma covers the entire display screen with the optical path and the sensor applied to the glass substrate to realize full-screen multi-point fingerprint recognition.

Tianma officially stated that fingerprint recognition in the TFP screen has three core advantages, namely high integration, full-screen fingerprint multi-point recognition and high screen-to-body ratio.

This solution breaks the limitation that the optical fingerprint in the LCD screen is difficult to match the thickness of the normal cover plate, and integrates the optical path modulation unit inside the display screen, which reduces the thickness by more than 50% compared to the external collimated optical path design solution, thus making the terminal product change Be thinner and lighter.

TFP supports fingerprint recognition in any area of the full screen, users can not only blindly unlock, but also customize fingerprint control and APP encryption and unlock, enhancing security and privacy.

Tianma integrates the fingerprint recognition function into the screen, saving more display space, thereby further increasing the screen-to-body ratio of the terminal product.

The fingerprint in the TFP screen uses an optical recognition scheme instead of ultrasonic. Compared with traditional screen fingerprints, TFP has a larger fingerprint recognition area.

In addition, fingerprint recognition in the TFP screen can be used in a variety of scenarios, such as APP deep encryption, improving vehicle driving experience, and providing protection for information security in smart factories, smart cities, smart homes, smart transportation, and smart medical care.

Tianma said that at present, the fingerprint recognition in the TFP screen has the conditions for mass production, and the manufacturers have received the products, and they will fully cooperate with the manufacturers to achieve the world premiere of the terminal.

Seeing this, many friends must have already shouted the slogan "LCD will never be a slave". However, don’t be too happy, because it is not known what the cost of multi-point fingerprint recognition in the TFP screen is, how high the yield rate is, plus it is a new technology, it is not mature and it is not easy to make a conclusion, and finally carry this The experience of using the terminal products of the package is still unknown. However, the arrival of multi-point fingerprint recognition in TPF screens has provided consumers and manufacturers with more choices. After all, many users on the market have a soft spot for LCD screens.

Why is it so difficult for LCD to realize on-screen fingerprint recognition?

For a long time, screen fingerprint recognition has been mainly used in OLED, so why is it so difficult for LCD screens to achieve this function?

The reason is that the optical screen fingerprint recognition has certain requirements on the distance between the sensor and the lens. The structure of the traditional LCD screen is relatively complicated and cannot self-illuminate. It needs to provide a light source through the backlight. Because of this, the light cannot penetrate the LCD screen, causing the screen fingerprint to fail to unlock.

The OLED screen can be self-luminous, does not require a backlight module, and has good light transmittance. Therefore, the on-screen fingerprint recognition sensor can accurately capture the light emitted by the OLED screen and the light reflected back after irradiating the user's fingerprint, so as to realize the on-screen fingerprint recognition.

In addition to optical screen fingerprint recognition, there is also an ultrasonic screen fingerprint recognition. From the material point of view, ultrasonic screen fingerprint recognition can be used for display panels of various materials, but Qualcomm's first two generations of ultrasonic screen fingerprint recognition technology is not mature enough, especially cannot meet the thickness requirements of penetrating LCD screens. Therefore, ultrasonic screen fingerprint recognition cannot be applied to LCD screens either.

No one dares to use LCD fingerprint recognition?

In addition to Tianma, other suppliers have also studied LCD screen fingerprints. For example, Huaxing Optoelectronics announced that it expects to launch an LCD full-screen single-point in-screen fingerprint recognition solution this year, and will launch an LCD full-screen multi-point in-screen fingerprint recognition solution in 2021.

In June last year, BOE stated that the optical fingerprint sensing technology under the LCD screen has been successfully developed and will be mass-produced by the end of 2019, after which there is no news. Prior to this, AUO announced the launch of the world's first full-screen optical fingerprint recognition LCD screen, but did not announce when it will be mass-produced.

In addition, Zhang Fan, chairman of Goodix Technology, said last year that the ultra-thin LCD screen fingerprint recognition chip developed by the company will soon be mass-produced, and he is confident of launching a mass-production plan within this year. After that, it was not clear whether the technology was actually mass-produced because no relevant news was found online.

At present, although screen suppliers have provided many LCD screen fingerprint recognition solutions, and all announced mass production, so far there is no mobile phone on the market that carries these solutions.

Even Redmi, which publicly promotes LCD screen fingerprints, just posted a Weibo, and mass-produced models have never been found.

It is worth mentioning that after Huaxing Optoelectronics announced the fingerprint recognition solution in the LCD screen, bloggers broke the news that the unlocking speed and recognition rate of fingerprints under the LCD screen are similar to those under the ultrasonic screen, and the anti-interference ability is poor. The initial cost of this solution is higher than fingerprints under the OLED screen, and no manufacturer is willing to take such a big risk to test the waters.

In addition, @digital chat station also stated that the accuracy of fingerprint recognition under the LCD screen of Huaxing Optoelectronics is low, not as good as fingerprints under the optical screen.

In other words, the current LCD screen fingerprint recognition technology is still immature, and manufacturers are not willing to test the water. Even if a model equipped with this technology is launched, it is likely to be a mid-range machine. After all, LCD screen fingerprint recognition is a new technology. It is somewhat inappropriate to use the flagship machine to test the water. If something goes wrong, not only the manufacturer must take responsibility, but also affect the brand reputation.

Of course, it is also possible that after the manufacturers get the new technology, they are working hard to test, the purpose is to allow users to try the new technology and get a good experience at the same time.
